Carol Cooke observes, draws and hand embroiders local birds, found feathers and forest debris. Her hand embroideries, watercolors and multimedia works demonstrate the birds’ similarity to us in daily life.
This series will consist on 52 small works, one done every week during 2018. Some are a character assassination, while others show the strength and lightness, the ugly and beautiful characters of our local birds.
Birds are often considered to be an outstanding indicator of the health of the overall environment. Rather like the proverbial canary in the coalmine, they are readily affected by changes in their ecosystem, whether these are caused by natural or manmade influences. These influences can be seen in subtle ways with in the work.
Experimental works on paper using rain to explore the unique patterns achieved with the occasional downpour, combined with observational drawings, pushes the work to an uncontrolled result, as random and erratic as rainfall. It reminds us all the unpredictability of the environment and our inability to control and subdue to our will.
