The latest on CBR Music with Jannah Fahiz
Hello, and welcome to 2025! And what better way to mark the occasion than shows. As work mode reactivates and school returns, don’t forget to treat yourself.
While being back at school is a bummer to some, it does herald the coming of another O-Week. Once again, the University of Canberra hosted a week of notable events for everyone to enjoy, with Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers performing all their hits on Friday, 31 January, and rapping rascal Allday popping in on Saturday, 1 February. Both shows were all ages events and took place outdoors with a backdrop of the lovely North Concourse Lawns.

If you’re after a short drive that will make you feel like you’re on a getaway vacay, Inez Hargaden’s EP launch is taking place at the stunning Tallagandra Hill Winery on Sunday, 9 February, from 4pm until 6pm.
The winery is located in Gundaroo, about 35 minutes from the city. Inez is an Irish singer-songwriter who calls Canberra home, who wields the best of folk, pop and rock to create emotional and honest stories. Inez shares that: “this will be an intimate evening of music, story-telling, and heartfelt connection”. Tix are $38.06 via Eventbrite.

Next up is Dulcimer Connections, in which four folk ensembles will be hitting the Smith’s Alternative stage on 15-16 February for a weekend of workshops, sessions and a concert devoted to the hammered dulcimer in all its forms. If you just want to sit back and enjoy the tunes, the concert is a slender $20 and takes place on Saturday, 15 February from 5pm until 8pm.
If you fancy rollin’ up yer sleeves and getting hands-on with the workshops, they are $100 (or $50 unwaged) and will run from 10am – 4pm on the 15th, and 12pm – 2pm on the 16th. Head to Smith’s Alt to get your tickets.
Have you heard about our shiny new venue? Dissent Cafe & Bar—helmed by Canberra mainstay David Howe of Live at the Polo, no less—recently threw open its doors and their gig calendar is already chunky. Conveniently located along City Walk (near the merry-go-round), they have a full café menu with vegan and gluten-free options. Check out their socials to stay updated with what the venue is doing.

One Dissent of note is locals Snake Oil Preachers on Saturday, 8 March. They’re a country-punkabilly party band performing songs of “sin, redemption, salvation and eternal damnation”. This blood-pumping, high-energy night will kick off 8-10pm, featuring two unctuous sets. Tickets are $15/$10 conc from Dissent Cafe and Bar.
That’s a wrap on this Locality. Get on out there and enjoy! And if you have any shows I should know about, send them my way. Catch you in the next one – Jannah
