[Column] Capital Youngster – March/April

Good day everyone! It is with the greatest pleasure that I welcome you back to Capital Youngster, your one stop shop for finding all the information on the underage music scene in Canberra!

We’ve had a tremendous few months since I’ve last written and I have so much wonderful music news to share with you. I am so proud to report that underage shows are becoming far more prevalent and the quality of said shows is absolutely astonishing. Talents such as Ruby Fields, Death Cab for Cutie and The Paper Kites have graced the stages of Canberra’s well-loved underage venues including UC Hub, the Canberra Theatre Centre and Kambri at ANU. An all ages show that definitely deserves a mention is ANUSA’s Friday Night Party: Euphoria, which was held on the ANU Fellows Oval and headlined by Aussie favourites Middle Kids and Hockey Dad. It was a fantastic night and it is so encouraging to have such huge acts coming to the capital and playing for people of all ages!

In terms of upcoming gigs, Canberra has a gargantuan month ahead.

On Saturday the 27th, Canberra DIY and Dirty Laundry are hosting Weekend at Palko’s, which will be a huge day filled with a whole lot of amazing live music. The incredibly talented lineup includes Canberra’s own Neko Pink (who have recently released their second single Loner and heads up – it’s amazing and you should definitely check it out), our all time favourite all girl band Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers, the unbelievably dreamy and beautiful Groovy Daughter, Peach Lane, The Wumpaz and Powder Blue (who have just released an EP and wow – these guys are talented).

Aside from these bands, there will also be a large array of DJs including LAB Co., Blk.Mgnolia and MelloWolf, plus the amazing Jess Herrington will have her own visual art exhibition. If this hasn’t convinced you to get on down to Braddon, the event has free entry, although you should probably chuck some gold coins in your pockets to support all our wonderful artists!

It’s that delightful time of year when Groovin the Moo is fast approaching and anticipation rapidly building. Probably the biggest and definitely one of the best underage gigs Canberra hosts each year, GTM this year falls on Sunday the 28th of April and will be held at Exhibition Park. The lineup is absolutely to die for and includes Billie Eilish, Hilltop Hoods, Regurgitator, Jack River, Nicole Millar, Hermitude, DMA’s, Fisher, Trophy Eyes, Thelma Plum, Fisher, Angie Mcmahon, Carmoflage Rose, G Flip and Holy Holy, plus the winner of the triple j Unearthed GTM competition, Canberra’s own Kirklandd!!! It’s going to be an enormous day!

That’s all for this month folks, thanks for tuning in!! I’ll be back next month with more news and gigs but until then, I hope you all have a wonderful month! Stay safe and have fun beautiful Canberra youngsters.

Love,

Pip
