Madi Creecy’s deux feuilles is an exercise in restraint and elegance, a composition that understands the power of subtlety whilst remaining dynamic throughout.

Created in collaboration with fellow Canberra musician Keo, who is also an audio engineer, the piece is built around the interplay of two pianos, weaving their voices into a singular narrative that strikes as both immediate and enduring.

The track opens in the upper register, its 6/8 rhythm creating a gentle propulsion. The melody circles in on itself, revisiting familiar phrases but with slight shifts in tone and emphasis. It’s contemplative and steady, never static, inviting the listener into a world where repetition becomes a form of exploration.

What sets deux feuilles apart is the balance between its two pianos. Higher notes float and glide, while the lower register provides a weight that anchors the composition. The production, understated but exacting, allows a seamless blend. And even with its relentless flourishes, the music lingers in the spaces between the notes—the room’s resonance and the air’s texture—making them feel inseparable from the composition itself.

Creecy has a knack for creating profoundly personal yet universal music. There’s purpose here, to let the listener find their own emotional connection to the piece. The cascading lines might evoke quiet introspection or equally a sense of resolve. It’s open-ended in the best way.

While deux feuilles could easily find a home in the cinematic world—perhaps underscoring a moment of quiet revelation—it shines as a stand-alone piece. It doesn’t demand your attention but earns it subtly and surely.
