IGNITE Program: Lake’s Edge by Margaret Healey, Ann Nugent and Ann Sommers

Picture: Birds by the Lake by Ann Sommers

10 December 2020 – 16 March 2021
Eastlake Gungahlin
51 Hinder Street, Gungahlin ACT

Opening hours
10am-12am Mon-Sun

Artists Ann Nugent, Ann Sommers and Margaret Healey have created these works with a shared water theme. Birds by the Lake by Ann Sommers will strike a chord with Canberra residents. Eastern rosellas are a familiar sight in our parks and gardens. Margaret Healey’s Path recalls scenic walks that take us around our lakes and waterways. Reflections by Ann Nugent is a reminder of the things we see in those treasured spaces.

The artists paint together weekly at Tingey Painting with Parkinsons workshops. Practices promoted through the program, founded in 1994 by Nancy Tingey, provide symptomatic relief from the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease as well as providing social support and connection. Painting sessions begin with a period of meditation and then participants are invited to listen to music and respond intuitively using quality watercolours and inks on paper. Rather than using deliberate and controlled movements, which are compromised by Parkinson’s, participants respond without thinking to the music, a process through which the unconscious mind can express itself.

This exhibition is part of the IGNITE program for artists who identify as disabled, D/deaf, HOH, chronically ill, neurodiverse or who have lived experience of mental health issues.
