The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA) is celebrating the latest release from the NFSA Restores program, Eternity, with the Canberra premiere on Sunday 25 August at 2 p.m., along with a Q&A with the filmmaker Lawrence Johnston. Eternity is a stunning documentary telling the story of Arthur Stave, who famously chalked the word “Eternity” in elegant copperplate handwriting on the streets of Sydney.
Lawrence Johnston will join the NFSA for two days of screening events on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 August, beginning with the 1959 film On The Beach, one of the starriest Hollywood films made in Australia to that date and itself the subject of Johnston’s 2013 film Fallout. Fallout will screen on Saturday 24 August and will conclude with a Q&A with Johnston, discussing his experiences as a documentary filmmaker.
NFSA Restores: Eternity will screen on Sunday 25 August at 2pm, also preceding a Q&A with Johnston.
NFSA Restores is an exciting program that seeks to digitise, restore, and preserve Australian films so that they can be seen in today’s digital cinemas. NFSA Restored feature films include: Sons of Matthew (1949), Sunday Too Far Away (1975), Storm Boy (1976), Newsfront (1978), My Brilliant Career (1979), The Odd Angry Shot (1979), Starstruck (1982), Bliss (1985), The Year My Voice Broke (1987), Howling III: The Marsupials (1987), Shame (1988), Flirting (1990), Black Robe (1991), and Proof (1991). Proof was restored with the public’s help through a successful crowdfunding campaign.
