At the heart of this exhibition, by students from Bonython Primary School, is an enquiry into what an Acknowledgment of Country means, and what it is for: to make an acknowledgement more than words that are simply said at assembly.
ACKNOWLEDGING COUNTRY is an opportunity for Bonython Primary School to work in partnership with the Tuggeranong Arts Centre and first-nations peoples, to showcase student art.
The exhibition’s concept was to develop student understanding and acknowledgement of the land upon which they learn, play, walk, and wonder, through art making. The artworks featured in this exhibition represent the journey that students have taken as they form a deeper understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and histories. As an enquiry-based one, the school focused the students’ learning on eight key questions.
As collaborators, communicators, researchers, thinkers, and self-managers, students have explored various art-making processes, underpinned by their learning about the land and Australia’s first peoples, and connecting these perspectives to their own experiences. This exhibition is a powerful acknowledgement of the beautiful Ngunnawal country on which we live and learn, and a gesture of reconciliation. Each piece embraces the diversity of student thinking and experiences and connects to new perspectives and understandings gained throughout the project: a starting point from which we can grow together in unity.
