It’s an unparalleled event in Canberra and the perfect place for music enthusiasts to expand their knowledge and their collections. This isn’t just for obscure jazz enthusiasts or ‘60s rock classic collectors. Every genre is represented and represented well.
But vinyl isn’t the only attraction. On top of the wax there will also be piles and piles of paperbacks and CDs. Everything’s available in all forms from the lowliest bargain to the finest collectables.
The event is open 9am-5pm Saturday June 2 and Sunday June 3 at Dickson Tradies Club and entry is free.

Applications are still open for the British Council’s 2012 Realise Your Dream awards but they’re closing this Sunday!
This year, three lucky winners will be awarded a $10,000 cash prize and a return trip to the UK, where they will be given the chance to meet their creative heroes and to experience all the cultural richness the UK has to offer.
Realise Your Dream is a unique opportunity for people working within the first ten years of their career, in any creative industry – from theatre to publishing, visual art to music, digital media to industrial design, etc.
Unlike many awards aimed at Australian artistic practitioners, Realise Your Dream allows its winners to choose their own direction once they get to the UK, whether it’s getting behind the scenes at the Edinburgh Festival, hanging about the studio observing a prominent artist at work or attending meetings at major arts organisations. The British Council will draw on its wide network of contacts to help winners realise their ‘dreams’.

GOD was a giant exploding quagmire of a calamity of a band. But they had their bad days as well.
At their best GOD sounded like a ten train smash-up in Tin Railroad Town. They were trying to encapsulate stadium rock and their ‘monster riffs’ often sounded like a playgroup had broken into the bottle recycling bin combined with that siren song of crap amps buzzing and wheezing you sometimes hear just before they blow up.
You just looked at those guys and listened to them and you knew right away they were the coolest thing going – a buncha hairy brat kids doing KISS meets punk, heads down and blasting away like a mining company that’s just been given the green light on a few hectares of unexploited desert.
But why all this hype?
A new GOD double vinyl reissue LP features the seminal Melbourne band’s 1987 mini-album Rock Is Hell and For Lovers Only (1989) together for the first time on full waxy goodness, and will be available from Friday May 18 at all good record shacks or at www.zmanrecords.com (via Z-Man Records/Fuse Distribution).
There’s only one album rock lovers need this year. That’s GOD. Same as last year, only now it’s on vinyl. Like Radar from M.A.S.H. once said, “Put a new fang in your tone-arm cobra,” and blast it today.
UC Live! and CITSA are excited to announce the return of the National Campus Band Competition in the ACT, with the state final scheduled for Thursday August 23 at the University of Canberra’s newest venue: Zierholz @ UC. If Canberra bands want to become part of the action entries are now open via www.aaca.net.au/ncbc.
NCBC is the largest live band competition in the southern hemisphere, running on Australian university and TAFE campuses across the country for 21 years. Each year up to 400 bands from over 40 institutions compete live, looking to be crowned national winners of this prestigious and highly respected competition.
To enter the competition, ACT bands must have at least one member who is a student of UC, CIT or ANU. Winners of the ACT NCBC final will take home $500 travel credit from STA Travel to get themselves to the National Final; $1000 cash from UC Live! to live like the rock stars they are; and studio time to the value of $1000 courtesy of the CIT Music Industry Centre to ensure their music gets heard.
The ACT winners will go on to compete in the National Final on Friday September 28 at Fowler’s Live in Adelaide and will join the ranks of such NCBC Alumni as Eskimo Joe, The Vines, Jebediah, George, Grinspoon, Waikiki, Frenzal Rhomb, 78 Saab, Augie March and The Vasco Era, to name just a few.
The star of ABC’s Black Books and genius behind the stand-up epics Tinselworm and Part Troll returns to the ACT this September with his new show: Qualmpeddler.
British comic, actor and musician Bill Bailey will embark on his eighth Australian tour with all the trademark Bailey elements: musical mash-ups, twisted logic, political ranting, brilliant visuals and animation, a clear-eyed yet surreal view of the modern world and some explorations of language inspired by a trip to China.
In 2007 he embarked on a sold out tour with his audio-visual comedic extravaganza Tinselworm. In 2009 he enjoyed a successful tour of Bill Bailey’s Remarkable Guide to the Orchestra. Performing alongside some of the UK’s finest orchestras, the show provided fans with the opportunity to see Bill’s surreal comic and musical imagination at its best. And he recently performed one of the biggest comedy gigs in the world to some 60,000 fans at Knebworth when he headlined the Sonisphere Rock festival alongside rock gods Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax. Add to this in December 2010 Bailey starred in and co-wrote and directed his own short film, Carpark Babylon. If his bizarre conversations with a car park ticket machine don't make you laugh, it’s unlikely anything will.
But maybe you don’t care about any of that rubbish. Maybe all you want to know is that Bill Bailey’s Qualmpeddler comes to the Royal Theatre, Saturday September 1 and that tickets to the show go on sale Friday June 8 through Ticketek.
Courtesy of the folks at Canberra CBD Ltd, Actew AGL and the ACT Government the Garema Place ice rink will be back this year, and it’ll be even bigger. The rink officially opens Friday June 29 and runs to Sunday July 29. Smiths Alternative Bookshop has been a quiet fixture in Canberra for more than 30 years. If you’ve ever walked between The Wig and Pen and The Phoenix you’ve walked past it; if you’ve ever gone looking for a rare book you’ve probably ended up there; if you’ve been keeping an eye on Canberra’s cultural calendar you’ve noticed more and more events being held there. Smiths’ has become a prime spot for a quiet tipple in recent times, and a local promoter has decided to capitalise on this by launching a series of winter gigs under the moniker The Paperback Sessions. The series’ inaugural gig sees two-time ARIA winner Brendan Gallagher (of Karma County) appearing on Friday June 8 at 8pm. Bookings are essential, call (02) 6249 7790.
Brooklyn’s dearly loved indie quartet Grizzly Bear have announced the release of their first album in three years, due for release in Australia on Friday September 14 on Warp through Inertia.
Recorded over the better part of a year, the album represents the band's most charged and concise collection of music to date and follows 2009's critical and commercial breakthrough, Veckatimest. The album title and other details will be revealed soon.

Grizzly Bear catapulted to fame when Veckatimest was released. The band soon became well-known for their vocal harmonies and hazy-eyed choruses, and this September the boys will kick off an international tour just two days before the release of their new album. Here’s hoping they make it to Australia.
Musicians will use any excuse for a party and the opening of Canberra’s newest studio I Am Merloc Studios was all the opportunity that the region’s biggest bands needed to put together the The Sam Sessions. Fondly named after studio owner Sam King, The Sam Sessions is a musical tribute of epic proportions spilling over the first weekend of June. Split into two distinctly different evenings, Friday June 1 is a series of electric performances at the Polish Club followed by a blissful acoustic evening on Saturday June 2 at Corroboree Park Hall, Ainslie. Each act on the bill has been lucky enough to record music with Sam. The first night features The Missing Lincolns, Cracked Actor, Pocket Fox and Fun Machine, and the second, The Ellis Collective, Julia & The Deep Sea Sirens, Mr Fibby and Dr Stovepipe. Tickets for each evening are $15 with doors opening at 7.30pm.
Liz Martin has the kind of voice that makes you want to lean in close. It’s a voice and talent that’s earned her a gold record with Paul Mac, tour spots with Sigur Ros, Silverchair and The Black Keys and the long-standing respect and admiration of Sydney’s underground electronic scene.
Liz is now set to tour the country after the release of her critically acclaimed third album Dance A Little, Live a Little. An album that fits in a sweet spot between pop, folk and jazz with a poetic groove and a remarkable collection of songs that reference Glam rock, New Orleans big bands, Parisian Noir thrillers and sci-fi romanticism. This album was written over five months while Liz was flat on her back recovering from hip surgery. She could have written an album of pain, but instead she chose a sense of playfulness. Music making became the painkiller, transporting Liz to other times, places, feelings and dreams. Magic Rob has been performing around Canberra as a solo act for years. Recently his magic orb resonated with guitarist Mystical Nath. With their combined powers they cast a spell on audiences and then upon Glen Stewart (drums) and David Bath (bass) who to this day have no idea how they ended up in the band.
Magic Rob Universe are playing their first live gig at The Front Café and Gallery. Those who have seen their shows will know spectators are in for a cosmic treat. The music will take you on a journey into the mystic world of medieval tales and science fiction fantasy with a stop over on Saturn’s rings.

One half of Australia’s sibling darlings Angus and Julia Stone has been booked to appear at the gently lit auditorium of Canberra’s newest venue.
On the strength of her new album By The Horns (released today) Julia Stone is set to embark on a national tour and is swinging by The Abbey in Federation Square when she comes to Canberra.
Featuring the gorgeous songs Let’s Forget All The Things That We Say and It’s All Okay the album is co-produced by Thomas Bartlett and Patrick Dillett, whose combined work includes credits on records by Antony & The Johnsons, David Byrne and The National.
After selling out shows in London, Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam, LA and New York, Julia Stone announced a run of dates which will see her play all capital cities and then some.

Dame Joans Love Children was formed by Mick Moriarty and the late Andy Lewis during their time with The Gadflys as an eclectic electric homage to their punk rock roots. Following Andy’s tragic death Mick was joined by the legendary Hayes brothers Bernie and Pat. Add to that Newtown’s favourite drummer Lachy Dengate and they’re ready to rock with a set of high powered punk inflected tunes from the back roads of life on the road.
Mick Moriarty was lead singer of The Gadflys. He performed with the band regularly on Good News Week for several years and also wrote material performed with the show’s Doug Anthony All Star Paul McDermott. Mick and Paul also toured nationally and internationally with their trio Gud.
Bernie Hayes performed with The Secret Seven, the near-mythical Shout Brothers, Dog Trumpet with Reg Mombassa and Pete Doherty and has released several solo albums.
Pat Hayes was a member of The Falling Joys as well as playing in the Secret Seven and Shout Brothers.
Lachy Dengate performs regularly with Shout Brothers and has played with Don Walker, Red Rivers, Rob Lucky and Panacea

Julia Johnson of local act Julia and The Deep Sea Sirens has won the ACT section of the triple j Unearthed Song Summit comp. She’s won a spot at an exclusive songwriting master class with Adalita and Gotye at Song Summit in Sydney later this month. MoneyKat is an international hip hop trio comprising Omar Musa (Queanbeyan), Mighty Joe (California) and Ishu (Melbourne). They just launched their debut self-titled album which has gained significant triple j play, was triple j Hip Hop Show Album of the Week and received outstanding reviews in street press around the country. After a highly successful Melbourne launch, they are about to launch the album in Canberra at Hippo Bar on Saturday June 2.
