Set in 1980, director Christian Petzold’s latest work centres on a doctor (Nina Hoss) exiled to a small town from East Berlin as punishment for applying for an exit visa from the GDR (East Germany).

Planning to flee for Denmark with her boyfriend, Barbara remains icy and withdrawn around her colleagues, particularly with the lead physician (Ronald Zehrfeld), who is hiding a secret of his own. With her patients, however, the guarded doctor is kind, warm, and protective, even risking her own safety for one of her charges.

But as the day of her planned escape quickly approaches, Barbara starts to lose control, over herself, her plans and over love.

Masterfully controlled and totally absorbing, this Cold War thriller expertly details the costs of telling and withholding the truth.

Celebrating their new CD release Mancini the Michelle Nicolle Quartet are coming to Canberra performing songs from the Henry Mancini Songbook. Since 1998 The Michelle Nicolle Quartet has released seven critically acclaimed albums. Their new CD celebrates the music of one of the world’s greatest composers. With original arrangements by Michelle, Mancini travels from two of the most well known pieces in history, Moon River and Peter Gunn Theme to lesser known treasures like the beautifully crafted Dreamsville. Widely regarded as the finest jazz singer in the country Michelle Nicolle continues to impress, with 2012 performances including Asia Pacific Festival (Siberia), The Schlot (Berlin) Wangarratta Jazz festival and a national tour with her quartet.

In Montreal, a Year 6 class is shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of their beloved teacher, Martine. Having learned of the incident in the newspaper, Bachir Lazhar, a 55 year-old Algerian immigrant, makes his way to the school and offers his services as a substitute teacher. Little by little, Lazhar comes to understand this motley but endearing group, among whom are Alice and Simon, two charismatic pupils particularly affected by their teacher’s passing. Yet while the class begins to heal, nobody in the school is aware of Lazhar’s painful past.

Nominated for an Oscar in 2012, Monsieur Lazhar is a profoundly moving story about a group of young schoolchildren coming to terms with the adult world before their time, and the inspirational educator who transforms their lives.

Two Double Passes to Dendy’s ‘Fashion Film Classics’:

With the 50th Anniversary of Canberra Centre approaching, Dendy Cinemas have the pleasure of assisting with the celebrations by hosting two classic fashion film nights in March.

The first event will take place on Wednesday March 6, with a screening of a film loved by many, the 1961 classic Breakfast at Tiffany’s. A young New York socialite (Audrey Hepburn) becomes interested in a young man who has moved into her apartment building.

The second event will showcase the ever so popular Sex and the City movie. The film continues from the hit TV show, with Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) a New York writer on sex and love finally getting married to her Mr. Big (Chris Noth). The movie will screen on Wednesday March 20.

Both events will be held at Dendy and the price is $15: sparkling on arrival, popcorn, lucky door prizes, mini fashion workshop and feature movie presentation.
