Three Copies Of The Very Best Of Dusty Springfield Compilation

Column: Giveaways   |   Date Published: Wednesday, 6 June 12   |   Author: Ashley Thomson   |   11 months, 2 weeks ago

To promote the upcoming live concert, The Very Best of Dusty Springfield featuring Deni Hines and Monique Montez at The Playhouse on Friday June 29, BMA Magazine have been given three copies of the newly released compilation of the same name to give away.

The compilation features 24 of Dusty Springfield’s best songs, including All I See Is You, Son of a Preacher Man, I Only Want To Be With You, You Don't Have To Say You Love Me, I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself, Wishin & Hopin, Stay Awhile and many more.

On a personal note, if you aren’t a Dusty Springfield fan, you should be. The woman is one of the most consistently brilliant songstresses of all time. Her work has been covered, remade, featured in films and generally rinsed by everyone with more (and less) talent than her for over four decades.

If you want a copy of this smashing new compilation (and if you don’t, do everyone a favour and stay in bed for the rest of your life) just email allan@bmamag.com and tell him what eerie Dusty Springfield song was featured in Guy Ritchie’s cult film, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.

Email the editor with your name, phone number and address to see if you can pick up yourself a one of these.

Three Double Passes To The Very Best Of Dusty Springfield: Live In Concert:

After a Sydney 2010 sell out tour, Monique Montez now joins Deni Hines in a National Tour – a concert to celebrate Dusty Springfield’s musical achievements, highlighting her hit songs and the impact they had around the world during the era of Black & White Soul.

Monique Montez wowed audiences with her brilliant portrayal of no less than

five major roles in Dusty the Original Pop Diva, so Monique jumped at the chance to reunite with Deni on stage once again. Dusty: the Original Pop Diva, The Musical was nominated for 6 Helpmann Awards including Deni Hines for Best Supporting Actress.

The new show is a two-hour spectacular by two of Australia’s leading theatre and pop vocalists, performing together and solo, backed by an amazing band in authentic ‘60s costumes. Dusty The Concert will leave audiences wishin’ and hopin’ that the show would never end.

[The editor takes no responsibility for the previous turn of phrase.]

Dusty The Concert comes to The Playhouse at Canberra Theatre on Friday July 29 and if you want to get your nostalgia-soaked hands on a double pass, email allan@bmamag.com with Dusty Springfield’s original name.

Two Double Passes To Busby Marou At Zierholz @ UC:

Rockhampton’s favourite sons Busby Marou have just returned from their first tour of the US and Canada with big smiles on their dials. April brings the announcement of their I Still Don’t Believe tour which coincides with the release of the deluxe edition of their debut album and their first performance at Bluesfest.

I Still Don’t Believe is the brand new single recorded with Anthony Lycenko (Elvis Costello, Xavier Rudd) in Byron Bay on their most recent tour and is available now for fans to devour.

This tour looks set to be the last chance for fans to catch up with their mates from Busby Marou before they head back to the US and Canada for the back end of 2012.

As such we’ve come into two double passes to their show at Canberra’s swankiest new brewery cum venue, Zierholz @ UC, on Saturday June 23. On the night they’ll be supported by Leader Cheetah and one of Australia’s newest acts to watch, The Hello Morning.

To win a double pass just email allan@bmamag.com with the answer to this question: What was the name of Busby Marou’s debut album?

Five Double Passes To Lenny Henry At The Canberra Theatre:

Acclaimed UK comedian, actor, writer, TV presenter, radio host and all-round Renaissance man Lenny Henry returns to his roots with a funky, funny and personal one man show, Cradle to Rave, about the thing he loves most: music.

What a coincidence. We like music too.

Touring nationally in June 2012, Cradle to Rave is Henry’s most personal show yet, offering a hilarious and touching insight into a man to whom music matters a little too much.

From growing up thinking Elvis was a relative as there were so many pictures of him in the house to missing a cue during his theatrical debut as Othello because he was listening to hip hop, Cradle to Rave sets Henry’s family, first loves and fame against a musical backdrop – a comic cabaret voyage through his life told via its eclectic soundtrack.

We have five double passes to give away to Lenny Henry’s show at Canberra Theatre, Sunday July 1. To win one just email allan@bmamag.com and tell him in which year The Lenny Henry Show first aired on British TV.

Ten Double Passes To Special Preview Screening Of A Happy Event At Greater Union, Manuka:

An intimate view of motherhood, A Happy Event explores one of the most thrilling, painful, joyful and altogether life-altering experiences of effervescent young graduate student Barbara Dray (Louise Bourgoin).

Entrenched in the writing of her thesis and head-over-heels in love with her boyfriend Nicolas (Pio Marmaï, La délicatesse), life is good for Barbara. However, pregnancy threatens to upset universal order and Barbara faces a tidal wave of fear, excitement and trepidation, all the while absorbing the dizzying spin of heartfelt well-wishers and wayward advice-givers.

Riding the highs and lows, succumbing to the cravings, morning sickness, the ever-bulging body shape and feeling the pressure on her relationship, Barbara’s attempt to conform to the image of the happy expectant mother is a journey fraught with anxiety and humourous charm.

Adapted from bestselling author Eliette Abecassis’ 2005 autobiographical novel, writer/director Rémi Bezançon presents an eye-opening, heart-warming story of dedication and togetherness, proving that nothing can fully prepare you for bringing a new life into the world.

We at BMA Magazine have come into ten double passes to a special preview screening of A Happy Event at Greater Union Cinemas, Manuka on Thursday June 28 at 6:30pm. To win one just email allan@bmamag.com with the worst baby name you’ve ever heard.

Five Copies Of Futility’s Second Album The View From Here:

Futility will launch their second full-length album, The View From Here, at The Basement on Saturday June 9 with support from Myraeth (Sydney), Katabasis (Sydney) and Tranquil Deception.

The album is being released by Tactical Solutions Records, a Canberra label belonging to Dan Nahum. He established the label ‘to deliver intelligent and obscure underground music to discerning listeners’ (or so its motto goes). It's a labour of love for Dan and Futility leapt at the chance to have him on board.
Futility guitarist Kurt Neist has a ‘project studio’ (spare bedroom) where he does recording for bands (Boonhorse, Law of the Tongue, Bleakwood, Greed & Rapacity etc. – a lot of Canberra metal bands) and the album was recorded there over a 12 month period.

It’s a fiercely local project for a fiercely local band. As they write: “We find the metal scene in Canberra to be small but dedicated and passionate. While it's great to play to a full house, the best local shows have a small bunch of guys going absolutely nuts and getting involved in the music. This is infinitely preferable to playing to a larger crowd standing around with their arms crossed and steadfastly refusing to have a good time because the music doesn't meet some imaginary 'hipness' criteria.”

So here’s the product of that grounded, straightforward ethos and 12 months of work: The View From Here. Courtesy of the guys in the band we have five copies to give away. To win one all you have to do is email allan@bmamag.com with the three adjectives the band has chosen to describe their music.

4 Copies Of Alison Wonderland’s New Album: Welcome To Wonderland:

This debut compilation from Australian electronic sensation Alison Wonderland sees her beautiful ethos brought to life: ‘I spin at places you want to hang out at, making you shake your ass like Beyonce on crack.’

Good things don’t get much clearer than that.

The wide-eyed, dodo racing, rabbit chasing girl of Lewis Carol’s opium induced fantasies has officially been superseded. This Alison didn’t fall down anything; she jumped head first down the rabbit hole and landed straight on the decks.

Armed with turntables, a killer vibe and an open mind, Alison turns countless dance floors across Australia into your favourite kind of Wonderland: more beats, less croquet.

Beginning with a background in indie and classical, Alison’s best card is her eclecticism. Throughout her youth Alison toured Europe as a principal cellist for the Sydney Youth Orchestra and later played bass in a successful local indie band.

But that’s not all folks! Alison has been the support dj for an extraordinary list of artists including Cypress Hill, Miike Snow, Phoenix, Vampire Weekend, A-Trak, Public Enemy, Arctic Monkeys, The Temper Trap, Yuksek, M.I.A, De La Soul, Spindarella (Salt n Pepa), Kele from Bloc Party and many more.

Rumour has it she never sleeps and is reasonably good friends with Oprah.

To win a copy of her new mix simply email allan@bmamag.com with the next line from Lewis Carroll’s famous poem, The Jabberwocky:

‘Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun …’
